Darkode was a “drug marketplace” established within the Dark Net marketplace online. It’s nothing new really; several other marketplaces operating on the dark net do operate similar to Darkode but they were shut down as the US Government began to close down many dark net drug sites. The reason that Darkode was shut down was because of the large amount of government money made from the sale of illegal drugs on the marketplace. Some of this money was given to legitimate companies who would sell drugs legally within the marketplace such as the Darkode marketplace. A large portion of the profits went to “front-end developers and programmers who create, support, and maintain the Darkode portal,” according to the US Government shutdown announcement. The Darkode website was shut down because the Escrow Company for Darkode didn’t have a proper system in place to prevent the abuse of the site and to ensure the security and safety of their customers’ information.
